12 Best Practices To Increase Google Crawl Rate Of Your Website

All these time, you’ve been waiting for Google to Crawl your website.

You tried to woo Google but, sadly, your efforts had gone unnoticed.

I’ve got some good news! You can put your mind at ease.

All along you’ve known the secret formula to increase Google crawl rate your website .

Drum rolls….and the formula is…

Regular crawls + Frequent crawls= Google love.

What is Google Crawl Rate ?

Google crawl rate is the frequency at which Googlebot visits your website. It will vary according to the type of your website and the content you publish.

If Googlebot can’t crawl your website properly, your pages and posts will not get indexed.

Keep in mind that you cannot force Googlebot to love you. Instead, send an invitation to show how amazing you are.

12 Effective Steps To Increase Google Crawl Rate Of Your Website

Without further adieu, here are some of the measures you can take to increase Google crawl rate.

1. Add New Content To Your Website Regularly

One of the most important criteria for search engines is content.

Websites that update content on a regular basis have a good chance of getting crawled frequently.

To improve Google crawl rate, it is recommended that you post content three times in a week.

Instead of adding new web pages, you can provide fresh content via a blog. It is one of the easiest and cost effective ways to generate content on a regular basis.

To add variety, you can also add new videos and audio streams.

2. Improve Your Website Load Time

Crawlers have limited time to index your website.

If it spends too much of time accessing your images or pdfs, it will have no time to check out other pages.

To increase your website load speed, have smaller pages with fewer images and graphics.

Keep in mind that embedded video or audio can be problematic to crawlers.

3. Include Sitemaps To Increase Google Crawl Rate

Every content on the website should be crawled but, sometimes it’ll take a long time or worse never be crawled.

Submission of sitemaps is one of the important things you have to do make your site discoverable by Googlebot.

With a sitemap, a website can be efficiently and effectively crawled.

They will also help to categorize and prioritize your web pages accordingly. So the pages that have main content will be crawled and indexed faster than the less important pages.

4. Improve Server Response Time

According to Google, ‘You should reduce your server response time under 200ms.’

If Google is suffering from longer load time, there is a good chance of your visitors going through the same.

It doesn’t matter if your webpages are optimized for speed. If your server response time is slow, your pages will display slowly.

If this is the case, Google will actually point this out on the ‘crawl rate’ page of Google Search Console. You can set it to ‘Faster’.

Additionally, use the hosting you have efficiently and improve your site’s cache.

5. Stay Away From Duplicate Content

Copied content will decrease Google crawl rate as search engines can easily identify duplicate content.

Duplicate content is clear evidence that you lack purpose and originality.

If your pages have duplicate content beyond a certain level, search engines may ban your website or lower your search engine rankings.

6. Block Unwanted Pages via Robots.txt

If you have a large website, you may have content that you don’t want search engines to index. Example, admin page and backend folders.

Robots.txt can stop Googlebot from crawling those unwanted pages.

The main use of Robeots.txt is simple. But, using them could be complex and if you make a mistake, it can banish your website in the search engine index.

So always test your robots.txt file using Google Webmaster tools before uploading.

7. Optimize Images And Videos

Only if images are optimized, they will be displayed in search results.

Crawlers will not be able to read images directly like humans.

Whenever you use images, make sure to use alt tags and provide descriptions for a search engine to index.

The same notion is applicable for videos. Google is not a fan of ‘flash’ because it can’t index it.

If you are having trouble optimizing these elements, it is better to use them minimally or avoid using them altogether.

8. Inter-link Blog Posts

When you interlink blogs within your own blog, Googlebot can crawl deeply in your websites.

Interlink old posts to new ones and vice versa. This will directly improve Google crawl rate and help you get higher visibility.

9. Use Ping Services

Whenever you add new content to your website, use ping services to inform bots about the update.

It is equivalent to waving a flag and asking the search engines to check out the new content.

Pinging is a good practice to follow as it can make a noticeable difference to how quickly your pages get indexed.

While pinging is definitely worth doing, results are not guaranteed and may vary. You must work on building backlinks and follow the best SEO practices.

10. Get Rid Of Black Hat SEO Outcomes

If you have included any black hat SEO tactics, you must remove all the related outcomes as well.

This includes keyword stuffing, usage of irrelevant keywords, content spam and link manipulation and other techniques.

Usage of black hat SEO techniques translates to a low-quality site for crawlers. Only use white hat techniques to increase Google crawl rate. Here are some best SEO case studiesthat actually worked.

11. Build Quality Links

High-quality backlinks will improve Google crawl rate and indexation speed of your website. It is also the most effective way to rank better and drive more traffic.

Even here White hat link building is a reliable method. Refrain from borrowing, stealing or buying links.

The best way is to earn them by guest blogging, broken link building fixes, and resource links.

12. Try To Get More Social Shares

There is no proof that social shares will influence search ranking but, they help new content to get indexed quickly.

For instance, Facebook doesn’t allow bots to crawl information that isn’t public and Twitter doesn’t allow any results to be crawled at all. If you perform a quick robots.txt check on their files to verify.

Still, Googlebot and Bingbot can access publicly available information on social media. Hence getting a decent amount of shares for your content will help in quick crawling and indexing.

Summing Up Our Google Crawl Rate Optimization Techniques

According to Google, Crawl rate is not a ranking factor.

Google wrote, “an increased crawl rate will not necessarily lead to better positions in Search results. Google uses hundreds of signals to rank the results, and while crawling is necessary for being in the results, it’s not a ranking signal.”

You will get more organic search if your website is in a good place on SERPs. This will happen if you have a decent Google crawl rate. So every search engine marketing strategy must consider a website’s crawl rate.

It is possible to increase Google crawl rate but, it will not happen overnight. You have to be patient.

Apply the above recommendations to your entire website and with time, the love will be mutual. You will definitely get more traffic for your individual pages too.

How To Decrease Website Load Time By 2 Seconds?

The growing culture of impatience has made people less tolerant towards waiting. It has affected so much so that waiting a couple of extra seconds for a page to load feels like an eternity.

People like fast websites and so does search engines.

Website load time are surprisingly important for SEO as they can make a huge difference in the ranking war.

Kissmetrics Website Performance Statistics - website load time

Clearly, increasing the page speed of your website is critical, not only for ranking but, to enhance user experience too.

Now, let’s jump in and improve your website load time.

Website Load Time Optimization :

Reduce HTTP requests

Every single HTTP request adds more time to the loading speed of your website. Reducing the requests can be beneficial to your website as users needn’t wait long to see your website. By minimizing the requests, you can increase usage metrics, such as time spent on site and pages visited.

It is now possible to reduce HTTP requests without destroying the design of your website.

  • Combine & inline your CSS scripts.
  • Minimize the number of
  • Limit the number of social buttons.
  • Use a content delivery network.
  • Convert images to Base64 code.
  • Minimize the usage of design and functional images.
  • Reduce the number of supportive files.

Improve server response time

It is recommended that you reduce your server response time to 200ms.

According to Google, these are the potential factors that may slow down your server response time.

  • Slow application logic
  • Slow database queries
  • Slow routing- frameworks, libraries, resource
  • Memory starvation

When you have the necessary data in hand, figure out how to address the problem. Once the issue is resolved, continue measuring your server response time so that you can quickly address future performance issues.

Note: Google’s PageSpeed Tools can give you more information related to performance related best-practices.

Enable gzip compression

Tuning the website load time is important. From a user perspective, reducing network transmission and bandwidth is also important. This is where gzip compression comes in.

A gzip compression can help to reduce the file size of web files like HTML, PHP, CSS, and Javascript. It can reduce them to about 30% or less than its original size before the files are sent to the browser of the user.

According to Yahoo, approximately 90% of today’s Internet traffic travels through browsers that claim to support gzip. So Gzipping generally reduces the sizes of pages by 70%

Note: Use a gzip compression tool to see if compression is enabled

Optimize images

In most of the websites, images are the main reason behind slow website load time. If your website has a lot of high-quality images, it will take around 15 seconds or more to load

Many of the images you use contain data that isn’t needed. So you can compress the images to make the file size small. Many people get scared of image compression because they think their images will look blocky and strange

But, you can use image compression techniques called lossless compression which compresses images without degrading the quality

Give importance to above the fold(ATF) content

When a website is loading, if content loads in a particular order, it is not good. Sometimes content at the bottom will load before the content at the top. This will lead to delay in content loading on top. This is known as above the fold

So start using only one CSS stylesheet and no inline CSS

Get a good hosting account

If you are not familiar with server design and architecture, it is not a problem. However, having a server set up properly is an important aspect of decreasing website load time.

Luckily, you just need a hosting account with a hosting company that knows what they are doing. $3 hosting per month will seem attractive. But, remember, you get what you pay for

Give attention to main pages

A general rule of thumb to follow here is 80/20. Let’s say 80% of traffic is coming from 20% of your pages. They must load quickly to reduce bounce rates. A common way to optimize those pages is by optimizing code and images, removing excess content, and fixing un-optimized JavaScript.

On your high traffic pages, you can load scripts asynchronously. It means that your main page structure and content loads before the script. For example, if you have an embedded YouTube video at the bottom of your page, you can load that script later. This way users can see the content on the top, and by the time they’ve read it, the video would have loaded

Minimize redirects

Imagine if you go sit at a restaurant and then you’re told that there is no food and you have to go to another restaurant? Redirects are similar to that. They reduce your page load speed and it is a waste of time to go from one place to another

Websites that have implemented a mobile SEO solution should pay attention to redirects on their pages. As more people use mobile to surf, redirects will become a big problem. It affects mobile users highly as they use a less reliable mobile network than desktop users.

Although there may be legitimate reasons for a redirect, they cause significant performance and speed issues

When removing redirects,

  • Find redirects
  • Understand why they exist
  • Check how it affects or affected by other redirects
  • Remove if needed
  • Update if it is affected
  • If you have a secure site, use HTTP Strict Transport Security to remove SSL redirect

As users demand a rich experience, the size of pages will continue to grow. There will be fancy JavaScript, more CSS tricks, and third-party analytics to evaluate our site

Remember, we must not let this bog us down

Summing up our website load time optimization tips

Some of these tips are easy to implement. And others might be intimidating if you are not technically inclined. If that is the case, you have to get help from professional website developer to evaluate options and implement custom solutions

301 Redirect – A Complete Guide for a Successful 301 Redirect

Last year when I moved to a new place, I forgot to transfer my utilities. I was so focused on packing my belongings, I completely forgot about them.

After I relocated, I found that my phone was dead, lights were out, and there was no gas in the kitchen.

What a disaster!

Undeniably, it was one of the most nerve-racking things I’ve experienced. It took a week to sort it out and have them up and running at my new place.

The same applies to your website too.

301 redirect is the term given for it in the world of technology.

If you’re moving your website’s URL, you have to make prior preparations so that when a user visits your site, they don’t find it to be dark and useless.

What is a 301 redirect?

By giving a 301 redirect command, you are sending details to search engines that you have permanently moved to a new URL. You’re requesting search engines to remove your old URL from their index and asking them to give credits to your new URL.

For example, if you want to redirect https://colorwhistle.com/cool/ to https://colorwhistle.com/, you have to give a 301 redirect to change from the old URL to the new URL. Once the redirect is in action, if someone wants to access https://colorwhistle.com/cool/ they would land on https://colorwhistle.com/.

To have a better understanding, let me explain how a web page is presented to a user. Whenever your website server provides a page of your site to a visitor, it gives a server status code in the header. This information is given even before the actual content is shown. It is to inform your web browser or search engine the contents (image, PDF, video) of the page.

ColorWhistle did a 301 redirect some time back. I have used it as an example to show what our server displayed when a user requested for the home page.

  • HTTP/1.1 200 OK is the server status code. And 200 OK means the page is available and will show if user’s request for it
  • Post the 301 redirect update, our server showed the below server status code.
  • A 301 redirect is compulsory whenever you move. Otherwise, users will get a 404 not found message for page requests and search engines index will be entirely dropped.
  • Note: To know which pages show a 404 error, use Google webmaster. It will give a detailed report of 404 errors and you can easily do the 301 redirect.

When should you use a 301 redirect?

Even a slight change in the URL can lead to a total drop of the page in search results.

If you want to maintain ranking and traffic of your website and preserve link value after your change to the URL structure, it is essential to set-up a 301 redirect.

To make the users and search engines job easy, do the redirect immediately after the URL change.

A 301 redirect is majorly done under the following scenarios,

  • A switch to a new domain
  • Changing lengthy URLs to a search engine friendly version
  • To prevent duplicate content problems
  • If you need a vanity URL
  • For example, let’s say we linked a Moz article to this page, but the URL is incorrect. We’d put a 301 redirect to direct users from the bad URL to the right URL

How is a 301 redirect important to SEO?

As humans move from place to place for various reasons, likewise web pages move too. Hence redirection is necessary.

Earlier, these 3 carefree ways were in practice for redirection.

  • Meta redirection
  • JavaScript
  • Server side redirection

When SEO became important, the troubles involved in using these methods became clear. They couldn’t properly inform the search engines about the page move. To smoothly carry the SEO efforts made in the old page to the new page, the new 301 redirect came into existence.

How to setup a 301 redirect?

When ColorWhistle changed its home page URL, a .htaccess file was created in the root directory and then a code was added. If you already have an .htaccess, you just have to add a line of code to it.

To change the pages URL from

The following code was added to .htaccess file,

redirect 301/cool https://colorwhistle.com

Here’s what the code means,

  • redirect 301 – informs search engines and browsers to move your page permanently
  • cool – old location of the page
  • https://colorwhistle.com/ – new location of the page for the server to redirect

Setting-up 301 redirect varies based on your site’s hosting. If you have a self-hosted site like WordPress, you can use a custom redirection plugin. If you’re not self-hosted, get in touch with you host for redirection.

Tips for a perfect 301 redirect

To protect the SEO investment you made to your site, these are some tips for a smooth 301 redirect.

  • Make a 301 redirect when you change your domain from http:// to http:// www. For example, http://RRR.com and http://www.RRR.com are considered to be 2 different websites because of the addition of ‘www.’
  • Before you switch to a new domain, it is mandatory to set-up a 301 update.
  • Redirect old external links of your website too.
  • Always set up a 301 permanent redirect instead of a 302 temporary redirect.

When you make changes to your website, make sure you preserve your SEO juice. Set up a 301 redirect so that search engines will know what’s happening and your visitors needn’t deal with “Page not found” errors.

A 301 redirect will forward your visitors to the right page, safeguard your sites traffic and search engine ranking.

Do consider the above tips before you make a redirection. I hope your next one will be smooth and trouble-free.

Google Possum Update : Has It Affected Your Local SEO?

SEO specialists know that things can change instantly, and dominant ranking today can mean nothing tomorrow. It’s becoming hard to control organic search ranking with all the Google updates: Pandas, Penguin, Pigeon, and Hummingbird.

Another massive local algorithm change was made in 2016 to the Google animal kingdom known as Google Possum Update .

What is Google Possum Update ?

Many business owners thought their “My business listings” have disappeared, but, it hasn’t. A filter named Possum was added by Google which impacted local search results. The primary reason behind this update was to diversify the local results and to put an end to spammy practices.

Why was Google Possum Update introduced?

In a nutshell, the update appears to

  • Provide importance to the physical location of the searcher
  • Give accurate variations between keywords to display different results on SERPs
  • Amplify gap between local and organic filters
  • Filter local results that have the same address

Unlike the other updates, Google Possum Update only affects the local search results. If you’re trying to rank number #1 and not worried about location, you won’t get affected. On the other hand, if you want to get to the top of the local 3-pack, you need to know that the Google Possum Update is harshly filtering irrelevant or duplicate listings from results.

Some of the commentators in the industry mention that Google Possum Update is the biggest update to local search since Pigeon in 2014.

Before we talk about the implication, let us understand what a Google 3-pack is.

What is Google ‘3-pack’?

Google 3-pack is a list of businesses you see in a query (service + location) that has local intent. Google wanted to serve mobile users better by opting to show three results instead of seven. The local pack is showing fewer business listings because it was motivated by mobile.

For instance, typing in “Web Design Company India” in Google.com shows the following.

For several years, Google has been giving small businesses an opportunity to shine in their niche without being overshadowed by prominent brands. Large brands could only dominate the local market if the local search signals outperformed those of the local businesses.

But now, even small businesses have to put in extra efforts to earn a top spot in the local SERP.

How severe is the Google Possum Update ?

Google is yet to confirm that a local search update actually happened. But, the effects have been widely observed and recognized by the search community.

Here is a screenshot on what Moz said about the Google Possum Update .

To know the impact of the update, Search Engine Land reached out to Bright Local to track the rankings of their clients.

In the study, Bright Local “looked at the ranking factors of 1,307 different businesses, which were tracking 14,242 keywords. Then we compared the difference between September 7 and August 31 (the date before Possum).”

They found that

  • 9% of the keywords had the business pop into the Local Finder when they weren’t there previously.
  • 11% of the keywords showed the business had increased in position by three or more positions.
  • 15% of the keywords showed the business had increased in position by one to two positions.
  • 35% of the keywords showed no change in position for the business.
  • 15% of the keywords showed the business had decreased by one to two positions.
  • 14% of the keywords showed the business had decreased by more than three positions.

Totally, 64% of keywords saw some type of change. After a few months of research, the SEO experts at ColorWhistle noticed the below behavioral changes in the local search result.

What are the effects of Google Possum Update on local search?

1. Better ranking for businesses outside the city limit

In the past, SEO professionals found it difficult to rank clients whose business address was outside the city limits.

It did not seem right as businesses inside the city limit can easily appear in the search than the ones situated in close proximity to the city.

After the Google Possum Update , all of this has changed.

The Possum algorithm does a proximity test to know if the business qualifies to be ranked in that city. So if a business is close to the city, it can easily rank with that city name.

Geographical proximity is no longer a factor that affects a business ranking in the local search results.

2. Address based filtering

Google does not like to show the same listing in local search results.

Some of the businesses had multiple listings for the same site. For instance, a doctor’s office would hire multiple physicians with their own practices who had a unique Google My Business page (GMB).

In the past, Google filtered such type of duplicate entries based on phone number or domain name.

After the Google Possum Update , it filters based on the physical address. Elaborating the above example, the local search will display the name of only one doctor in that office.

Keep in mind that the other listings haven’t been removed; they are simply given a lower ranking.

3. Importance of Location

The Google Possum Update has made the local search results more dependent on the user’s location. Earlier, search results relied a lot on search terms.

Now Google uses the IP address of the user performing the search to display results accurately in the local 3-pack.

Location is given so much of importance because Google wants to optimize for mobile users and give them an outstanding experience.

4. Sensitivity to keyword alterations

Even slight variations in keywords are having significant effects on search results. This can majorly affect how you test your local SEO. So it is important to test a variety of word variations, even if they are similar.

Below is the result variations in Google 3-pack for Web Design India and India Web Design

5. Separation between Local and organic search

We know that Google tries to remove duplicates from search results. This rule was followed for both local and organic search results.

Before the update, if the URL you are linking in your local listing was filtered organically, it would have a negative impact. And, some of the local listings would link to a site that was organically filtered. Because of this, Google filtered that listing from the local search.

Post the update, local and organic search filters operate independently.

Summing up Google Possum Update

The Google Possum Update has significantly shaped how 3-pack and maps are generated.

Plus, it is important to remember that Google is constantly testing and tweaking algorithms all the time. If you want to comprehend what Google has released, you need to continuously follow SEO factors and keep track of industry changes.

The Google Possum Update is still work in progress. There have been quite a bit of variations even after the update which indicates that Google is still testing the algorithm.

The important thing to do now is to find out if your ranking has been affected by the Google Possum Update .

Everywhere, results are mixed. Some observe a change in positioning; others see a drop in positioning. If you have gone backward, you’ll need to revise your strategy to figure out what has to be adjusted.

Regardless of your local search ranking after the update, revise your local data and content to stay relevant. Otherwise, you will lose online visibility, and with it, customers.

The above effects are the well-known changes in the Google Possum Update. The SEO community is still analysing to know how it has influenced local SEO.

We will definitely keep you posted if anything new is discovered.
